A few years ago, our parents made a bold decision — to rebuild Broadlands, a nearly 40-year neglected family farm in Cedarmont, near Standerton. What started as a restoration project soon became something far more meaningful. We pitched in and renovated the buildings and brought in a Dutch Shepherd, Trigger, as a personal protection dog for two elderly parents living on the farm. He was more than security — he was companionship, presence, and peace of mind. But life changed.
After the passing of my mother, and facing reality, I could no longer look after my father on the farm, and he could no longer remain alone on the isolated farm. Almost overnight, we were faced with two realities:
What would become of Trigger… and how would we protect a farm that had become vulnerable after years of investment? During this time, we were supported by experienced trainers who helped stabilise the situation and we continued the development of Trigger as a detection and protection dog. The immediate security risk was reduced — but it became clear that Broadlands had far greater potential.
Then, in December 2025, everything shifted. Kian Kruger, a skilled and passionate dog trainer, needed a new base for his training operations. We offered him the opportunity to build something bigger — not just for him, but for the community. We constructed a professional 10-kennel facility and began the process of becoming PAPA licensed. That was the beginning of Broadlands Kennels & K9 Training.
